Collectors get a kick out of finding an alternate cover that they didn't know existed. Below are many soul albums that had dual covers with identical music. The original cover is shown first. James Brown alternate covers have already been documented here. This gallery is subjective and by no means complete, although I did try to limit the reissues to within a few years of the original release. In other words, there are no modern reissues. Here are the four styles of cover variations:
  • Albums with identical covers except for the title (Originals, Billy Stewart, etc.). This was often done when they pulled a second hit from the album.
  • Albums with different covers but identical song lists (Booker T, Al Green, etc.). Usually when the first cover was deemed inadequate.
  • Albums that were reissued on a subsidiary or different label (Solomon Burke, Bettye Swann). Let's sell 'em again!
  • Albums that were reissued with a new catalogue number (Lou Rawls, In Loving Memory). Often done for perennial Christmas releases, or reissues a few years later.
