Although The Staples Singers were always a gospel act, they managed to cross over into the folk scene of the late '50s and
later into the Stax soul scene in the early '70s. They managed to retain their gospel base by recording pop songs with an
uplifting or prideful message, such as the song "Respect Yourself." Lead by Dad, Roebuck "Pop" Staples on tremolo guitar and harmonies,
and featuring the unmistakable sultry voice of Mavis Staples, the Staple Singers were much beloved.
