In 1968 Gram Parsons started "The International Submarine Band" which was probably the first rock band to play unapologetic country music. Of course Rock & Roll got it's start from an amalgamation of Rhythm & Blues and Rockabilly (think Elvis), and many country tunes crossed over during the years to become hits on rock stations (Ring of Fire, Mohair Sam, etc.). But it wasn't until the late '60s that rock bands dipped into the country repertoire and started adding steel guitars and fiddles to their sound.
