#138. WLPs With Timing Strips

As most of you know, a WLP is a "white label promo," a promotional record with a label that looks the same as the regular label, except that it is white with black print. Some labels like Capitol, MGM and Verve were yellow, and Mercury used many other colors, but the industry standard was white. These WLPs were sent to radio stations to get airplay, mainly in the 1960s and 1970s. A few record companies like Columbia, Epic, Kapp, Reprise and WB added a "timing strip" to the bottom of the front cover to make it easier for the jocks to see the song titles and get the song length. This was generally a strip of paper glued along the bottom third of the front cover with the song titles and times. When the album "died," these records often found their way to used record shops. Back in the day some folks would try to remove the timing strips with dastardly results. Recently these records have become collectible, especially for popular artists. It's common to find WLPs without timing strips, or timing strips on albums with stock labels. It's difficult to find both on a desirable record.
